Dezeen has teamed up with BDG Architecture + Design workplace expert to broadcast a live conversation with his chief creative officer Colin Macgadie on how business spaces can be designed to adapt to the changing needs of workers and companies.
The talk, titled ‘People First, Ready for the Future’, was moderated by Dezeen founder and editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs and was the first live chat to be streamed live from the brand new Dezeen Studio Space in London.
During the discussion, Macgadie explained how office space is BDG Architecture + Design has created worldwide advertising and media group WPP illustrate an evidence-based approach to workplace design and practice-oriented flexibility.
In 2015, BDG Architecture + Design completed the renovation of several floors of Sea Containers, a historic 1980s building on London’s Southbank, which will house a number of WPP-owned brands, including an advertising agency. Ogilvy and the media planning agency MEC.
The project is known for the importance given to circulation spaces and the abundance of common spaces designed to facilitate informal, flexible work practices. These include a double-height amphitheater, extensive catering facilities and staircases with built-in platforms that can be used for meetings or long-term project work.
Since the completion of this project, BDG Architecture + Design has continued to create buildings for WPPs around the world, including campuses for the group’s brands in Amsterdam, Detroit, Hamburg and Paris. In addition, the company is working on two more buildings to expand WPP’s presence in London’s Southbank.
As Chief Creative Officer at BDG, Macgadie leads job creation for all of the company’s clients. Under his creative leadership, BDG was given the task of creating office spaces for clients including Google, Lego, Nike and Sony, as well as WPP campuses around the world.
During Macgadie’s tenure, BDG Architecture + Design opened studios in New York, Sao Paulo and Shanghai and won two BCO awards for Innovation in 2017
In 2019, he gave a keynote speech on “The Future of Work” at the inaugural International Vitre Day of Architects in Basel, and in 2020, Macgadie sat on the jury for Frame Awards.
