The Soho House Members Club has opened a location in Austin, Texas, with interiors influenced by regional styles and pieces from local artisans.
The latest addition to the list of clubs and hotels around the world, Soho House Austin occupies two floors of a new building called Music Lane on the city’s modern South Congress Avenue.
The spaces of the restaurant, bars and lounges are open to members on May 25, 2021, while the second phase — a hotel with 46 rooms and a variety of event spaces — will welcome guests later this month.
Throughout the space, the team at Soho House Design used colors, patterns, materials and motifs that embody the spirit of Texas modernism, a style that combines modernist forms with materials and designs indigenous to the region.
Spanish influences – which are also commonly found in the South American state – are also woven into the interior, in the form of limestone walls, antique furniture and sisal floors.
“Our house in Austin is the first Soho house in the southern states,” chief designer Harriet Liley told Dezeen. “Located in the new building, we worked hard to bring authenticity to the design. We created a space that feels old and loving in an instant, from the choice of materials to the style of the furniture and artwork.”
All visitors enter through the reception on the ground floor, where restored wooden floors, oversized sofas and linen curtains give an aesthetic tone to the outdoor spaces.
To the right is a bar and lounge to enjoy snacks and drinks before the screening in the adjoining projection room, where members can relax in velvet armchairs and sit comfortably in cashmere blankets.
Two floors up, the terrace surrounds the perimeter of the building and includes an outdoor dining area, part of which is covered with a wooden pergola that has an opening for the growth of a large tree.
Banquet seats and low-backed chairs are upholstered in pale fabrics that complement the wooden furniture, planting and limestone floors.
Plaid tiles extend inside to the club space which has a central bar with a carved wooden facade, along with stone tables and leather seats. Linen lanterns hang from the dark ceiling of restored wood.
Local potter Keith Kreeger it has been tapped to create a range of large lamps, and works of art by Indigenous Austrians like Deborah Roberts and a host of emerging young talents complement the interior.
The frescoes created specifically for the location include one in the inner staircase next to it Hayley Mitchell which takes hints from ancient mythology as depicted in modern art.
Another mural from Desireé Vaniecia he can be found by the rooftop pool and “uses figurative practice to challenge stereotypes and tell stories about African-American women”.
“We built on top of our basic palette to liven up the house with a layering of local Austin artwork, elegant antique furniture and rugs native to Texas, a blend of natural canvas, older leather, colorful tribal prints and beautiful ceramic collaborations,” Liley said.
The pool is reached by a cactus-lined path and is surrounded by deckchairs upholstered in footprints influenced by Texas.
“Our pool bed fabric is design Clarence House which we fell in love with, inspired by Mexican heritage, “Liley said.” We loved the fun nature of the motifs, sitting next to the bright checkered floor below. “
The bedrooms are arranged on the upper two levels and are decorated with tiled floors, sisal rugs, linen curtains and headboards, and limestone walls that added a Spanish flavor.
Cabinets are either made of exposed metal frames or are carved on the walls and covered with a curtain.
The larger bedrooms have access to outdoor terraces filled with living furniture set on terracotta floors.
Soho House Austin also has a music room for events and live performances, as well as an adjoining green room with its own entrance.
Over the last decade, Austin has evolved into a creative hub and a popular tourist destination, and the Southern Congress area forms the trading heart for restaurants and hotels.
Visitors can stay at the Magdalena Hotel and the Austin Motel, both stone from Soho House.
Meanwhile, options across the river in the Downtown district include the Austin Proper Hotel and Residences with interiors of Kelly Wearstler and Line Austin in a renovated mid-century tower.
Soho House was founded in 1995 in London, but has grown into a network of space for members spanning Europe, America and Asia. Some of his newest clubs include Downtown LA, Brooklyn and Mumbai, while Tel Aviv, Paris and Rome open in 2021.
