Soho House Austin combines Texas modernism with Spanish influences

The Soho House Members Club has opened a location in Austin, Texas, with interiors influenced by regional styles and pieces from local artisans.

The latest addition to the list of clubs and hotels around the world, Soho House Austin occupies two floors of a new building called Music Lane on the city’s modern South Congress Avenue.

Soho House Austin is the company’s first club in the southern United States

The spaces of the restaurant, bars and lounges are open to members on May 25, 2021, while the second phase — a hotel with 46 rooms and a variety of event spaces — will welcome guests later this month.

Throughout the space, the team at Soho House Design used colors, patterns, materials and motifs that embody the spirit of Texas modernism, a style that combines modernist forms with materials and designs indigenous to the region.

Spanish influences – which are also commonly found in the South American state – are also woven into the interior, in the form of limestone walls, antique furniture and sisal floors.

“Our house in Austin is the first Soho house in the southern states,” chief designer Harriet Liley told Dezeen. “Located in the new building, we worked hard to bring authenticity to the design. We created a space that feels old and loving in an instant, from the choice of materials to the style of the furniture and artwork.”

All visitors enter through the reception on the ground floor, where restored wooden floors, oversized sofas and linen curtains give an aesthetic tone to the outdoor spaces.

To the right is a bar and lounge to enjoy snacks and drinks before the screening in the adjoining projection room, where members can relax in velvet armchairs and sit comfortably in cashmere blankets.

Two floors up, the terrace surrounds the perimeter of the building and includes an outdoor dining area, part of which is covered with a wooden pergola that has an opening for the growth of a large tree.

Banquet seats and low-backed chairs are upholstered in pale fabrics that complement the wooden furniture, planting and limestone floors.

Plaid tiles extend inside to the club space which has a central bar with a carved wooden facade, along with stone tables and leather seats. Linen lanterns hang from the dark ceiling of restored wood.

The frescoes created specifically for the location include one in the inner staircase next to it Hayley Mitchell which takes hints from ancient mythology as depicted in modern art.

Another mural from Desireé Vaniecia he can be found by the rooftop pool and “uses figurative practice to challenge stereotypes and tell stories about African-American women”.

“We built on top of our basic palette to liven up the house with a layering of local Austin artwork, elegant antique furniture and rugs native to Texas, a blend of natural canvas, older leather, colorful tribal prints and beautiful ceramic collaborations,” Liley said.
